How has the Corona Virus affected me? Personally, this has been a time of deep reflection. A time where everything you do day in and day out does not seem to mean as much anymore. Or does it? This is the time we need to do the things we are passionate about the most. When the world comes to a complete stop, as it has for the first time since probably WWII, it allows all of us to unite and be stronger than ever. Although I was only a newborn during 9/11, some of what we are seeing today was seen on that eerie fall day in New York City some 19 years ago. The mantra "through crisis comes opportunity" rings ever so true today. We can choose to stay mad at the world and everything it took from us, like Prom and possibly graduation, or we can embrace the situation and use this time to make our lives and communities better. It is ironic to think that for so many years, you work so hard for the wrong reasons. By this I mean, If you were to ask the students in the Platinum Program why they chose to stick it out for 4 years they would say (me included) something along the lines of "Oh I just wanted to be on that stage at graduation and wear the sash". The truth is, this should not be the real reason and motivations should not be driven by recognition but rather by fulfillment and self values. In the end, we challenge ourselves to be the best versions of ourselves and to get out of our comfort zone because ultimately, that is the only way you will improve. If you are not willing to have an open mind and learn every single day then you will become stubborn and complacent, the ultimate enemy to growth. While right now in this very moment it seems like the world is coming to an end and many of us are impatient for the mundane habits of life to start back up again, this time represents a small portion of our young lives. We have our whole life ahead of us and it is up to you as an individual to best prepare yourself for the greatest future you can imagine. While we can cry and sulk over the cancellation of Prom and the possibility of having virtual graduation, there are many people out there who have it much worse than we do. I believe this is a time for all of us in the world, no matter what country you are from, or what religion you practice, or what political party you support, or what race, gender, or sexual preference you are, to come together and be greater human beings because of this situation. More than ever, we need to find a way to impact those around us and find new ways to inspire them.
